Do you have some more improvements for this page? I think it is useful enough now to move it to Commons:Guide to adminship and link it from Template:AdminWelcome. -- Bryan (talk to me) 09:44, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think also that this page is worthwhile. However, I suggest you to add a paragraph about the deletion of Commons pages, especially category pages.
Indeed, I notice that administrators are both overzealous to delete categories and reluctant to get them back, even when they have made obvious mistakes.
This behaviour don't comply with Commons policy, and is harmful to the project because:
  • delete a page doesn't save place (the page can be undeleted, hence the data is still stored)
  • contributions are made under the GNU Free Documentation License, which is not honoured when a page is deleted, then recreated with the same contents which has travelled with the return ticket
  • indirectly, it causes irrelevant edits, or edit wars, in order to trigger off inappropriate deletions or to prevent them
The only result is waste of time and dissatisfaction. I thank you to pay attention to this problem. --Juiced lemon 12:07, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Is a guide to adminship the right place for this level of detail, even if there is general consensus? Maybe yes. Worth thinking about. I do support taking this page away from Pfctdayelise and her private space and socializing it, making it a resource for the good of all :) (as per Bryan's suggestion) ++Lar: t/c 15:23, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. I have some serious concerns about Image:US Government most-wanted Iraqi playing cards.jpg, how it came here via BetacommandBot, and how it persists here under the questionable judgement of Betacommand. You have participated in the discussion of bot status for BetacommandBot, so I'd like you to participate in the discussion of Image:US Government most-wanted Iraqi playing cards.jpg. Thanks for your prompt attention to this matter.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:58, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Misc[edit]

  • Common village pump is highly inefficient. How do you estimate will be considered a proposal of adopting it.wiki style VP (it:Wikipedia:Bar?
Plus: auto-archiving, self categorizing, threads may be added to watch list per days or individually, pageloads can be split in smaller units if you have a slow connection, graphic interface, avoid pages with 10.000+ entries in history (hard to recover from copyviols), easier to find authors in page history.
Against: a little expertise needed (few days), high number of subpages, can't have templates in signatures (to avoid overload, a good practice anyway)
Note: it needs a slight redesign, to add date to subpage name, else there may be name conflicts (not a really serious bug, just an occasional rename needed)
  • Adminship: on it.wiki I am having some long-standing quarrels with a couple a few of users. They resulted in some blocks (2 of them abusive kamikaze blocks by resigning admin, 2 fair hours to avoid a flame, one given to all users involved in a discussion, and maybe today one asked by me to cut a flame growing from 2 days and where I was the matter of discussion, but kept mostly uninvolved). Do you think this will be prejudicial for an eventual adminship request on commons? --Jollyroger 11:39, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • What if you are the type of person who likes to follow all discussions?
Just open the it:Wikipedia:BarTUTTO fullpage, that looks like the standard VP.
  • There's no easy way to see which discussions are "hot topics", is there?
There is Wikipedia:Bar/Discussioni_importanti (forget that awful template, some people loves to spam it around and we had to comply in the less painful way)
  • the hard bit is finding someone to implement it (or do it yourself).
I built myself the core of that VP, but it was heavily improved by indexing made by bot and graphic style, whick I can hardly work on.
  • If you can point to a couple of months or so of good, helpful contributions on Commons, that is what voters will really look at.

Yeah, that was my idea. (I got blocked 3 days right now - fairly- : personal attacks after three days of sharks circling around)

Thx

Some tips for converting MOV to OGG: User:Rama/video commands[edit]

You added the above to Commons:Media help/Unix in June, but times have changed, perhaps, or at least it might fit better at Help:Converting video now. I'm not totally certain about this, though, as I'm only a lowly translator, but was wondering what the sentence was doing there. --Ranveig 16:32, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Could you comment here? I also would like to know what kind of voting you had in mind.. just a list of all eligible images and check which ones you would want to vote for? We need to make some quick decision about that, because there is a lot I have to change in limesurvey. We probably also want shuffling. -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:18, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Redesigning Special:Upload elsewhere[edit]

Hi, I'm an admin in Greek Wikipedia, I try to make the upload form like the one here at commons and en.wikipedia but I need some help. I even used your bot to copy system messages, it helped a lot, but I have a great problem: Langcode upload forms use system messages as needed except MediaWiki:Licenses:xx. For example: elownwork uses el:MediaWiki:Uploadtext/elownwork but instead of using el:MediaWiki:Licenses/elownwork it just uses the default el:MediaWiki:Licenses. The same appears on the rest langcode upload forms. Can you figure what is the problem? Thanks in advance. Geraki 14:37, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello Pfctdayelise, I added another FP (Image:Asian_fan_dance2.jpg) to your POTY-Galleries (objects). It was somehow not in the Chronological gallery. Userbox takeover[edit]

Hi, what do you think about this vote? Basically a small number of us are voting on turning a much used user-info-box system into a system where people must reach some level of recognition through Quality image and Featured Picture promotions. I have a fundamental problem with the idea of one group (those of us who participate in QI & FP) 'privatising' the existing userboxes, templates, and categories -

templates {{User PH-0}}, {{User PH-1}}, {{User PH-2}}, {{User PH-3}}
categories Category:User_PH-0, Category:User_PH-1, Category:User_PH-2, Category:User_PH-3

eg

PH-2 This user is able to take good quality photographs.

If the latest proposals take effect, I think most users in category ph-2 for instance will suddenly find they are no longer 'entitled' to use {{User PH-2}} on their user-pages (because, like most contributors, they haven't participated in QI & FP and hence have no promoted images). This is at odds with general usage of all other user-boxes such as babel-language-boxes and others listed in Category:Graphics_abilities which are used at will as declarations of some ability or interest.

No one seems to be addressing my concerns apart from counting my opinion as a negative vote ;-) Perhaps I haven't been clear enough and no one sees my point, perhaps no one cares.

(PS the proposed changes won't affect me personally as I'd still be categorized as 'ph-3'). --Tony Wills 12:10, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for the reply :-). So you don't think there is a fundamental problem with turning a user-box that anyone can use (like all other userboxes I know of), to something that will be claimed by a particular group (inevitably someone in that group will want to 'enforce' the 'correct' usage as per the new definitions). Seems like a good way to get ongoing conflict with every new person who comes along and adds the userbox they think appropriate, when someone else removes it until they have 'proved' themselves.
As far as I know only about 10 of the {{User PH-1}}, {{User PH-2}} users have been notified (a random selection), there are about 230 {{User PH-2}} users alone most of whom would be 'demoted' by this proposal. Perhaps I should let them all know and leave it at that. --Tony Wills 23:42, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "I don't think there's a "fundamental problem" if that "particular group" is absolutely transparently open in its membership." as I don't really see what the openess of the memership has to do with whether it is right or wrong for any self-selected group to define how others should use a commons resource :-). I have no problem with them creating their own set of templates, just a problem with taking ownership of existing templates designed for a different (although related) purpose. I agree a seperate set of templates is appropriate., though your suggestion of {{Qi}} or {{Fp}} templates does not appear to be what the voters are looking for, they're asking for those numbers to be converted into milestones so they can show their ranking. --Tony Wills 09:50, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
{{fp|N}} where N is a ranking rather than a count and accompanied by text describing them as 'advanced', 'expert' etc is what would satisfy them :-). Saying 'this user has 3 FPs' is not what they seem to be looking for, they (at least some of them :-) want a rank so that they can say I am one of the elite :-) --Tony Wills 11:45, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User:Fabelfroh copyright discussions[edit]

Hello again, this User and I had a heated but informative discussion that was 90% resolved on my talk page Copyrights The problem is and he said he would bring it up on a Commons discussion page but I haven't seen it, is that he claims the copyright information should appear on the Gallery image page under each thumbnail image. If you go to his Categories and Galleries you will see what I mean = example Dicranella heteromalla. I believe the copyright information is inside the actual Image and a duplicate info is not needed in the Gallery of Images, I have never seen anyone put "Photo by (name)" under the thumbnails. This is now a peaceful discussion LOL and can you get a clarification on this by reading the Copyright discussion on my Talk page and let him know. Thanks in advance WayneRay 10:01, 27 October 2007 (UTC)WayneRayReply[reply]

Here is his response, sorry to bother you again but he just doesn't see that if no one else is doing it, just stop, so now as you can see he wants to bring thumbnail copyright labelling to a discussion, WayneRay 21:39, 27 October 2007 (UTC)WayneRayReply[reply]

Hi Wayne,

It has always been Wikimedia Commons practice that having the image link to the image page which contains all the licensing and author information is sufficient recognition of the licenses we accept. If anyone wants to insist otherwise indeed it requires a big public discussion, at the Village Pump and/or on the mailing list. According to current practice images don't require captions attribution. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 14:53, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
The problem here is that the generated thumbnails do not have any EXIF-tags and therefore lacking any copyright information. According to the GFDL every derived work of the original (and a thumbnail is exactly that) must have such information attached. Not removing the EXIF-data would be sufficient, otherwise it would be a licensing breach. I already ask a friend of mine (who is a lawer) to look into this but it'll be take some time. The problem here is that the GFDL originally was designed for text and not for images. I think that could make things a bit complicated. When I have an answer I'll take the discussion to Commons:Administrators noticeboard. Fabelfroh 20:06, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

An Idea...[edit]

Hello ;),

Please see a new Idea : User_talk:Foroa#Set_my_favorite_License_in_my_User_Preferences_.3F.3F.
The same topic was also post on the villagepump, using some other words to explain : Commons:Village_pump#Set_my_favorite_License_in_my_User_Preferences_.3F.3F. If the first presentation is not clear, the second one should help to make my idea clearer. Yug (talk) 08:21, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hey Yug :)
Making it happen via the preferences would mean getting an extension accepted and enabled, which is long and slow. I suggest writing on the mailing list to try and get a JavaScript guru to code something up, so that whenever you visit the upload form your favourite template is already chosen or written in the form. That would not be that hard, I think. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 09:33, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Great. Yug 12:47, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Euh... just an question. "I suggest writing on the mailing list to try and get a JavaScript guru to code something up" means :
  • someone will have to do this ? => great.
  • I have to do this ? => oups... O.o
If it's the second case, I have to notice that I was active this week mainly to prepare the dissolution of the former Stroke order team (✓ Done). Then I had this idea, so I communicated it to the community, that's more that what I have to do. Now, it's to the commons's community to accept and lead this issue, or to forget it. I'm sorry, but I will not start to walk on a new task.
Sorry for this strange behaviour,
Yug 15:37, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Ok. So I just will move your first answer to the village pump, hoping that someone will lead this issue in the way taht you suggested to me.
For my first post on your talkpage, it just aimed to get your opinion on the village pump or on the Foroa's user talk page. I know that you do REALLY much more for commons that what you have to, and so I wasn't requesting that you lead this issue (I perfectly understand that you already have many ideas and projects to lead), but just an encoureagment or opinions on the bistro. I now hope that someone else, encouraged by our comments, will lead this issue.
Like every time : thanks for the good work you already do !
Yug (talk) 07:39, 29 October 2007 (UTC) <and sorry to have not clearly state that I looked for simply for an opinions/encouragment.>Reply[reply]

✓ Done: I have paste your comment on the village Pump, with one more sentence, in the spirit of our previous talk. It also seems that Foroa will lead himself this iddue(source:his talkpage). Yug (talk) 08:33, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have an even simpler solution and the weight is on the uploader. I use a program that writes everything in for you, once you set up the page (or Template). It is called TypeItIn and I believe it is free or at least very cheap and can be downloaded at Typeitin.com I have one template for each category of photos that I upload or as in one sedit of 200 bird photos where the categores were dead linked because the uploader was just creating them from the speciaes name and didn't know about linking them to the next higher Category, I just set up the proper links in Typeitin and was done in no time. In less than a second, it types in all the information for you no matter how much you encode. Hope this helps. WayneRay 13:04, 29 October 2007 (UTC)WayneRayReply[reply]

Please try it :)[edit]

request for deletion[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise! Could you delete this image? I've uploaded it, thinking it was free. Now I've heard from Israeli Wikipedians that there seems to be a copyright for scans under Israeli law. I'm still following up on it, but I'd prefer to have the image off Commons for the time being. One Israeli Wikipedian has offered to ask the potential copyright holder, and I don't think the right holder will be particularly pleased and accommodating if he finds that "his" image is already mirrored all over the internet... Thanks, Ibn Battuta 19:18, 31 October 2007 (UTC) PS: At the moment, the image is not used anymore.Reply[reply]

Hi,
I very much doubt that Commons would honour any country's idea that scans introduce copyright. If you want this deleted please make a full deletion requestion. Best would be to discuss the general case of Israel's laws about this at Commons talk:Licensing. thanks, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:29, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
I sure hope you were kidding? As long as the Commons wants to be a legal image database, it may want to recognize copyright. (And Israel's copyright is worth no less than, e.g., US copyright. Just in case this should really require explicit mentioning.) If you see yourself not qualified to delete a copyrighted image without prior voting, I'll be happy to contact one of the administrators who even delete non-copyrighted images. Best regards, Ibn Battuta 06:56, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Why not go through the standard procedure as I suggested? If what you say is correct then there may be a large class of images affected by this. Therefore it makes sense to have an open discussion and be able to use that to refer to it later (precedent), rather than a single note on someone's talk page. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 07:58, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As I wrote initially, this is very likely a matter of infringed copyright. This means that the image is illegal on Commons. I thought that is a sufficient reason for acting fast. Anyways, I wanted to be especially quick because, I wrote initially, someone has offered to ask the likely copyright holder for his permission to use the image. His willingness (to give up what seem to be his legal claims) won't exactly increase if, by the time, all larger search engines have his image in their cache, other pages have mirrored it, etc. Quite apart from the fact that it does not exactly do the image of Commons and Wikipedia a favor. I can only repeat that I was under an error when uploading this image, and being the uploader, I've wanted a quick solution. I'm surprised to hear that this seems so difficult. Regards, Ibn Battuta 16:54, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Suggestion for Greenspun Illustration Project[edit]

Do you think the Greenspun Illustration Project could be used to somehow support the current Wikibooks/Wikijunior search for improved logos? --Xixtas 04:09, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Wikibooks logo is an illustration of poor quality, it should be an svg and is not and it is shown on tens of thousands of pages on various Wikimedia projects. I certainly didn't mean to suggest anything inappropriate. --Xixtas 03:44, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons:Ownership of pages and files[edit]

I'm afraid the situation is controversial. This page is considered a guideline. Everything in it should have consensus. Please show me where this has been established. Rocket000 15:57, 18 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm sorry. I didn't realize it may only be my experience on Commons (plus a little bias, I guess). Just to give you an example, here's a discussion I'm currently involved in. Granted this is not as big of an issue with photographs as it is with SVGs because of their format (if you ever edited one with notepad, you know what I mean), but the line I removed made no distinction. I have ran across many new versions of files that were modified simply to remove metadata. For examples of this, just look at the diffs between some SVGs that are visually the same (usually the summary says "clean up" or "optimized code"). Sometimes this gets reverted by the original author, but fortunately, so far I haven't encountered any edit-warring. However, this does show that people have different ideas about using metadata. (See also: w:Metadata#Criticisms)
Since, this topic still needs to be addressed, I suggest a revised version of this guideline (which I should have done in the first place, instead of just removing the sentence). So...
The original line:
"However you are welcome to embed rich information about the file content, author and license directly in EXIF-tags inside the image, see Commons:Manipulating meta data"
The replacement:
"However, you may embed information about the file directly in metadata tags, see Commons:Manipulating meta data. Keep in mind, other users may remove this as they feel it's unnecessary."
Now I leave it to you to fix my systemic bias :) I remove the EXIF part because it's only relevant to certain image formats. We may also want to include the benefits of certain types of metadata (optimization instructions, program/camera settings, accessibility options, etc.). Maybe I'll add something to Commons:Manipulating meta data. -Rocket000 15:26, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Polish translation[edit]

Hello, I'm translating the upload interface on Commons into Polish. I have a question. Could you tell me the URL of the page where I could find the upload summary box? I'm going to translate this: {{Information |Description= |Source= |Date= |Author= |Permission= |other_versions= }} into this:

{{Information |Description= |Source=własna praca |Date= |Author= |Permission= |other_versions= }}

Could you also tell me if there is a possibility to describe with Polish letters the meaning of the English words in this box? E.g. {{Information |Description<!--opis-->= |Source<!--źródło-->=własna praca |Date<!--data-->= |Author<!--autor-->= |Permission<!--pozwolenie-->= |other_versions<!--inne wersje-->= }}

Is this possible? Not all Polish users understand these English words.

mass deletion[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise,

I don't have the time to do that today, but a speedy delete tag should be on a batch of images uploaded by user:Nevit. Images like Image:Swimming 10074-b.svg, Image:Swimming 10074-a.svg, Image:Swimming 10073.svg (there is about 50 of them, all with the same name pattern, uploaded by the same guy). The problem is the license cannot be PD-Iran on those images, and I bet they're still copyrighted. The PD-Iran license states that photographs and films are copyrighted for 30 years (so before 1982). Those images are from a 1982 book, so the PD-Iran that is really unappropriate. I told the uploader that I was going to ask for deletion. Can you see what you can do ? Thanks. Animal alphabet video[edit]

I got your message about the animal alphabet video. This is actually licensed under GFDL a per the info page. If there is a frame in the video that references CC, it is a mistake, possibly picked up from something else. Video fixed[edit]

Hey pfc,

I don't make a habit of closing active discussions as such, and I haven't done it in many cases. I did it here because;

  1. There was an even balance of keep and delete arguments, both of which seemed valid in context
  2. The discussion was old and no longer active

Because of this, I suggested that the discussion be restarted, in the hope that a new consensus be formed. I'm not in the habit of closing this way, and will make a keep/delete verdict wherever possible - I just thought that it would be best in such a case to be sure the verdict was clear.

Cheers, Giggy 22:40, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yeah, if the discussion was still active (if it was at COM:DEL for instance) I would have - but the likelyhood of further discussion at that time was very slim. Giggy 00:25, 14 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload form[edit]

Would it be a good idea to restructure the upload form to have separate fields for source, author, etc. instead of just one "summary" field? Even if the {{Information}} template is already filled in, I still see many uploads where either the template is left blank, or filled in incorrectly.

For a proof of concept and to see what I mean, try this modified upload form. (Attention: this form works only properly on Firefox. It's just a prototype, and would need more work to be made to work properly in IE and other browsers, and for internationalization, too.) That form should refuse to upload a file unless the original source, the author, and a license are filled in. It could be extended to handle other fields, too.

What do you think? Lupo 13:16, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't care how it is done. If it gets done within the MediaWiki software, I won't have to or be able to do it, and it would certainly be the cleanest way. But, as you said, that's not likely to happen in the near future.
The JS mockup is just designed to put a new interface over the same old server code. It basically just provides separate input fields for the fields of the {{Information}} template, and upon submitting puts together the template. It could be expanded to cover also fields for categories, or to check that a file has been specified at all. It could—since it gets the different inputs in separate fields—probably also be extended to do even more, such as proposing a matching "Creator" template for the author, if one can be found. And, of course, the hope is that forcing people to specify the source, the author, and a license will reduce the number of drive-by uploads where we get none of this info. But this proposal for a redesign of the upload form is not intended to open the way to a truly flexible metadata system. I guess that would need changes in the database to do properly.
I'll see whether one of the other JS cracks could help fine-tune this for IE and other browsers. (I don't know IE well enough to do that myself.) Lupo 13:54, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Looks very nice to me. I'll be without internet for two weeks very soon, so I'll probably be unable to help. I like it, but I'm not sure whether we should force using. I'm pretty sure some people get annoyed. -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:13, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Any change will annoy some people, as does not changing. Source, author, and license are mandatory already, we just don't enforce their being set at the upload but rather we tag such images as {{Nsd}} and delete them after a couple of days. That's a stupid process that creates a lot of unnecessary work for people.
May I suggest that we continue this discussion at MediaWiki talk:UploadForm.js? I don't want to hijack Brianna's talk page for this. Lupo 08:24, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

POTY pt translations[edit]

Hi! A part of that text is translated, I'll try to do some more throughout today. I had left a message for the pt community on pt.wiki's Village pump some time ago but the only person helping out was someone from Wikibooks :'(.

I'll add myself to the non-core commitee, if that's ok, I'll be happy to help on the pt part. There will be a week around New Year when I'll have very limited, if any, internet access, but otherwise I'm available. Cheers! Patrícia msg 13:27, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Re: Image use permission[edit]

Thanks for you answer at the village pump. But, as I understand it requires individual permissions for each of the images uploaded. That may be a bit of hassle for some (particularly for people who are not registered users here). I was actually looking for something like this. It doesn't make the owner of the images work so much to grant permission. Ideally we are more interested in his work than he is interested in us. Is there some way we can keep the hard work off the owner and still make it work? Aditya Kabir 11:14, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Valuable Image Proposal[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise, I am currently drafting a new Valuable Image Proposal and I have involved a few other users I know to get some feedback in the drafting proces. In a few days I think the draft is ready for publishing on COM:VP. However, the proposal is rather long and detailed (especially the image examples are quite voluminous) and I am concerned that the proposal will be considered spam if I move it all to a single post on COM:VP. Is it better instead to just post a few lines and then redirect elsewhere for the detailed proposal? If yes, where should I place the draft proposal once it is ready?

Finally, I am also curious to hear your opinion about the draft proposal in its present state. Best wishes -- Slaunger 13:40, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons:Picture of the Year/2007/Galleries[edit]

Thank you for your message and for the nice work in the organization of the contest. Here are some remarks:

  1. I think there are too many galleries. Maybe the following could be fused: Objects and Miscellaneous (Miscellaneous); Other animals and Mammals (Other animals).
  2. Instead of "Maps, illustrations, emblems and art", maybe "Graphic art and maps"
  3. I don't like the name "The built environment". Why not just "Constructions" ?
  4. Instead of "Arthropods" (not familiar to many users) I would put "Insects and other arthropods".
  5. Image:Sunset-cartagena-tower-Igvir.jpg should be in "The built environment", not "nature views";
  6. Image:Fishmarket 01.jpg should be in "Other animals", not "Miscellaneous";
  7. Image:Klosterkirche hirschhorn fenster.jpg, Image:Pere lachaise detail.jpg and [[:Image:Steenbrugge Grafmonument 02.jpg] should be in "Maps, illustrations, emblems and art", not "Miscellaneous";
  8. Image:TulipStair QueensHouse Greenwich.jpg should be in "The built environment", not "Miscellaneous";
  9. Image:Uniformity.jpg should in "Objects", not "Miscellaneous". -- Alvesgaspar 16:07, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. I also had some remarks and I've already been bold and implemented them.
  1. An Echidna is a mammal
  2. Tibia insulaechorab is 'an other animal
  3. I moved Image:Drought.jpg to 'Miscellaneous'
  4. I think Image:Fishmarket 01.jpg should be in 'People and human activities' as it is a market picture, but I haven't moved this one yet.
  5. I don't agree with Joaquim on the merging (more than 50 is a lot!) and on the renaming of the arthropods categories.
  6. for the rest only kudos.

Mmm, registering an account is very quick as you know, and it prevents others from taking your name on another project. Anyway, do you think it would be a good idea to set up a page and allow voting on Commons itself, to get more votes from Commoners? It makes little sense to have a 2007 election at any other time imho. We have yet to alert other languages but that's my next step. Ideally, if we had enough quality we could just take part in the normal POTY election with a news category... I think the fact that both run together will only stimulate voters for the other election, instead of being a hinderance. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:05, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload form[edit]

I wish you had pointed me to Commons:Redesigning the upload form when I first mentioned my ideas to you. I've only discovered that now. Looks like I could simplify certain parts of the localization support in MediaWiki:UploadForm.js...

BTW, do you have an idea where the text "Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, xcf, pdf, mid, sxw, sxi, sxc, sxd, ogg, svg, djvu." at Special:Upload comes from, and where it can be localized? It has been localized for the German upload form, but I just can't find it anywhere. Lupo 10:10, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Furthermore, I notice that the bot mentioned at Commons:Redesigning the upload form#Using and abusing the uselang parameter has evidently not been run here at the Commons. See the German "ownwork" upload form, which uses English labels! Which causes a minor problem for the new modified German "ownwork" form, which ends up with a mixture of German and English labels, since my script does handle these "hacked" uselang parameters, but doesn't change labels of fields it leaves unchanged. Speedy delete/bad name/rename question[edit]

Hi Elise(?)- I saw your post on Template_talk:Bad_name and thought you might be able to help me understand my image renaming/deleting options. The other day, while uploading an image here, I mistakenly picked the wrong file from my computer. I then tried to re-educate myself on my options for dealing with my error. I was tempted at first by Template:Bad name, but if I read the guidance for correctly, it's only meant to deal with uploading the right file under the wrong name. What I wanted to fix was uploading the wrong file under the right name, so to speak; that is, I was looking to delete the undesired file and replace it with the desired one. In the end, I uploaded the right one with a slightly different name, and requested deletion for the bad one--which seems to have been fulfilled right before I went to contact you, as it turns out. I just now re-encountered Template:Rename, which seems to offer something I thought was not an option--see this [bug]. I am tempted to try that on something I did last summer: Image:What_am_i.jpg. This image was tagged by another editor in October with Template:Rename, with no effect so far.

Sorry for the long preamble--here are my questions:

  • Am I right in suspecting that Template:Bad name might be the best solution for the wrongly uploaded file, or was Template:Speedydelete the best thing?
  • Do you happen to know if, contrary to what the above bug discussion implies, Template:Rename is in fact available and functioning?

Thanks in advance for any pointers. --Eric my en.wp talk page 19:27, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Eric,

In the end, I uploaded the right one with a slightly different name, and requested deletion for the bad one - that's exactly what should happen. :) The trick is to upload the image with the better name first, then request the bad-name one for deletion (using {{Bad name}}). This is because we would rather have a badly named image than no image at all, so if you don't upload the correctly named one first, the old one might not be deleted.

{{Rename}} represents a request for someone else to do the re-uploading, it doesn't actually mean the image will be renamed unless someone volunteers to do it. So for your own images you should definitely do the housekeeping yourself. :P

hope this helps, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:02, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi- I read you about uploading the properly named file before implementing {{Bad name}}, but what I'm wondering is, when I mistakenly upload a pic of an orange under the name 'apple', then upload a pic of an apple under the name 'Apple', can I use the bad name template to remove the orange pic from Commons? The guidance seems to say that {{Bad name}} is only for cases of duplicate pics, i.e. two differently named copies of the same pic of the same apple.
As for {{Rename}}, it sounds like in the case of Image:What_am_i.jpg, it's quicker to upload the same image again with a new name, then put the bad name tag on the old version? Thanks again for your help. I'll watch here. --Eric my en.wp talk page 13:45, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As for {{Rename}}, it sounds like in the case of Image:What_am_i.jpg, it's quicker to upload the same image again with a new name, then put the bad name tag on the old version? Yes, that's true.
I am a bit confused about your first question: when I mistakenly upload a pic of an orange under the name 'apple', then upload a pic of an apple under the name 'Apple', can I use the bad name template to remove the orange pic from Commons?
If you accidentally upload a picture that you never meant to upload at all, you can use {{Speedydelete}}. If you meant to upload some picture but accidentally put the wrong one, you can just upload the right one right over the top of it. If you scroll down on an image page you will find a link "Upload a new version of this file". Just follow that. The old image will still be accessible in the file history unless you ask an admin to delete it.
cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 07:52, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, I didn't know about the new version upload option--that sounds like what I wanted for the first case. I'm surprised that the system keeps the old version, though--I think it would reduce clutter and admin workload if it defaulted to deleting the old version. Thanks! --Eric my en.wp talk page 13:47, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That would be awful for image vandalism, if you couldn't "revert" back. :)
In fact, since image undeletion was implemented, even deleted images are usually not really deleted - like deleted pages, they're just accessible to only admins. cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 14:10, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Featured Illustrations[edit]

Hi, on Commons we have a lot not used FP in any Wikimedia Projects. A part of them is rather useless - a lot of sunsets. I think about 2 ways - Commons:Featured Illustrations or new rule in FP - "use this image in sister Wikimedia Project before nomination" (this way could be very difficult). I try use FP in the Polish Wikipedia and sometimes I don't know what images ilustrate, cause they are not used or they have weak descriptions. Sometimes FP has excellent Q, but nothing more. What do you thing about this idea? Przykuta 14:26, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. Q - quality :) Look at this picture Aitutaki sunset 1.jpg - excellent, but i don't know what could I ilustrate - postcard? :) sunset? (we have better), Cook Islands? - rather not, Aitutaki? - this photo is not the best to ilustrate this atoll. I have found more FP which are problematic to use in Wikimedia Projects. Przykuta 08:00, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Description - sure, but if I know what I nominate, I can use image in article. Sometimes of course we have not needed article (insects, flowers etc.) So, user who nominate picture could show how it illustrate article or suggest name of article to use image in. This would not be problematic. Another problem - we have very good photos, but if you want to use them in article sometimes you want to crop them :) A Butterfly on a flower: Image:Argynnis pandora LC0052.jpg - very good composition, but not to good to use in infobox - butterfly is to small, flower is needless on this photo. (I don't know anything about ecological relationship between this flower and this butterfly). Image:Hoverfly on leave edit.jpg - similar problem. I think about one thing, when I use them - cut, cut, cut :) to use cropped version. But, of course, we could nominate very good images used not only in Wikipedias. Photos in Wikinews - I think about something like World Press Photo :) - ilustrations of events, images in Wikibooks - Image:Flower poster.jpg - IMO a perfect illustration to book of flowers. Anyhow - users could argue, why nominated images are the best and useful illustration. Przykuta 13:52, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, but maybe this rule could be added to FP guadelines in Commons - "usefulness for Wikimedia projects". We have "wow factor", "usefulness factor" could be IMHO acceptable. But it is qeustion to our community in Commons. Best regards (I'm going to write an arcitle about results of POTY in Wikinews ;) Przykuta 22:19, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi,

I noticed that when the language interface is set to Portuguese (both pt and pt-br versions), the link to "Upload file" is set to Special:Upload, not Commons:Upload/pt (I use the English interface, so I didn't notice that until recently!). I have no idea how to change this - can you help me?

I'm noticing now too that several upload forms need translation to pt. Oh the shame, I should have really thought about this before, and double-checked that the forms were all working well in Portuguese :(. I'll work on these ASAP. Patrícia msg 15:28, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That's defined at MediaWiki:Upload-url and subpages. I've fixed it for you. The actual link text appears to be defined at MediaWiki:Uploadbtn and subpages. I've updated Commons:Redesigning the upload form accordingly. Oh, and Patricia, while you're at it, could you please make sure that the label for the file on the user's computer says (in Portuguese, of course) "local file", not "original file" (configurable at MediaWiki:Sourcefilename/pt). I think "local file" is much better, "original file" (or "Nome do ficheiro de origem") can be easily confused with the filename or the URL to the source. Which could be a problem for the new upload form, which has an extra input field for the source (and which also will need some translations :-). Lupo 16:04, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(continuing the talk here then :)) Thanks, I'll take a look at this the next few days. Wish the day had more than 24 hours... Patrícia msg 23:30, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Er, I think you shouldn't update the sidebar link until the forms are completely translated. Bit of a rude surprise to end up on an English form just by clocking Portuguese links... pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:19, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know it's not a perfect system (yet!) but at least the users are directed to the page where they can choose different kinds of upload, e.g. Flickr or "I don't know what the license is", whereas before they were not. If you think it's still not ideal, it can be changed back until everything is translated. Patrícia msg 13:09, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Own work" upload form[edit]

Could you please make some copies in your userspace (e.g. User:Timeshifter/MediaWiki:Uploadform/ownwork) and fix them up as you see fit, then we can compare more easily? This way you can also tweak it to your heart's content rather than making a separate request for every little change. I think it will be more efficient. cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:57, 5 February 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I like the suggestion to "tweak it to your heart's content." :-)
I suggest making steps 2 and 3 of the "Own work" upload form into a separate document that can be edited by any registered user. Or just me. ;)
This way I don't have to bug the admins with "a separate request for every little change." Steps 2 and 3 could be combined into one "how-to" section on how to fill out the form. It would be an "include" page that is transcluded into the upload form.
I am not sure it will ever be complete, though. So creating a separate page will still irritate the admins if I have to get approval for every new version, because I will never be finished with it.
I have already lost steam on the process, and may not get inspired again for awhile. I can't just turn the inspiration on and off, and I am not getting paid. So the further irritation of waiting a day or two to get new versions uploaded takes the joy out of it altogether.
The current instructions are not that great, so I don't see why we don't just allow any registered user to edit Steps 2 and 3. It can always be reverted back to the last stable version. --Timeshifter 12:40, 5 February 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe another way to go about this is to set up the "own work" sandbox page as a subpage of Commons:Upload. That way I won't feel responsible for working on the "own work" page when I lose interest or inspiration. And others will be able to help out, too. This way anybody can edit the sandbox at anytime, and admins can upload the sandbox, (or their adaptation of it), periodically.
I like the idea of using subpages of Commons:Upload because the subpages will then be directly linked to the Commons:Upload root page, and by extension to the talk page for it: Commons talk:Upload. Plus there will be a talk page for the subpage. So people will have access to Commons talk:Upload and the subpage talk page.
Commons talk:Upload also has the table of links to all the other upload pages and their talk pages. So people can go from the subpage sandboxes to all the other related upload pages. The main talk page at Commons talk:Upload is a place people can go for advice from a wider audience, too. --Timeshifter 03:24, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload form redesign[edit]

Code development for the new upload forms is completed now. We've got two versions now:

  1. The initial version with one description field.
  2. The version you proposed with separate description fields per language.

Both forms work fine (and degrade well, too), both can be localized, and both forms even are properly restored if navigated to through the browser's back button (e.g., when the server reports an error, such as an empty file).

I've personally tested these forms on Firefox 2 and IE6. The next steps would be now asking for beta testers using other browsers (IE7, Konqueror, Opera, ...) at the VP, and if these tests are done (and any problems they might detect are fixed), switch it on.

But now that we have two versions, what to do? Hold a poll at the VP which one is preferred, or simply go with the second version (separate descriptions per language)? Personally, I'm tempted to just do the latter, as the departure from the plain upload form is already a big step in either case. What do you think?

To switch it on, I would just include the new script in MediaWiki:Common.js. That would automatically change the upload form for all users without having to edit all the upload pages to add the "withJS" bit in the links. For power users who prefer the old form (easier to copy/paste pre-written {{Information}} templates...), the current plain form will be still available at this link. I've no problem with reopening it. Would you like me to do so, or would you like to do it yourself? Cheers ~ Riana 15:11, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

re: Upload form redesign[edit]

As you can see at MediaWiki talk:UploadForm.js#Beta-testing, I have already placed a call for testing. So far, it's confirmed to work of FF, IE6, Safari 3, and Konqueror. No info on IE7 or Opera, or older browsers. I've asked User:Magnus Manske to test on IE7, but he didn't reply.

I also prefer the "one-description-per-language" form. The fields are specified to be 2 lines high, but FF insists on using three lines. Don't know why, but on IE6, they're shown as two lines.

On localization etc, please see the extensive documentation at MediaWiki:UploadForm.js/Documentation. In general, all non-translated labels and error messages automatically get a "translate this!" link that'll take them to a page where the user can enter translations.

I would not add a "revert form" button. This is for inexperienced users; I think it suffices if there are links to the plain form at Commons:Upload (see the mock-up for how I would change that). But of course, if consensus turns out to be that such a button is desired, I'll add one.

I will post another request specifically for people using Opera or IE7 to test the form. Even if I don't get any responses from that (I am confident it'll work :-), I will about a week later drop the "one single description" version and then propose at the VP to enable this globally. Even if this is enabled globally, there will still remain ways to get the simplified current form. See again the documentation.

Upload forms and the software update[edit]

Please see Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Upload form broken. It breaks the design of our customized upload forms at Commons:Upload! Lupo 10:52, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yeah, Tim rolled back the change that caused this problem. There is, however, still another minor problem listed at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#new parser/preprocessor online.
Ok, I'll see if I can write clearer instructions on how to translate this using the on-wiki page. I don't want to move the built-in default texts into a separate script (or even into several separate scripts, one per language). It would be neater, and could be done, but there's a catch: script loading is asynchronous, which means that the code in MediaWiki:UploadForm.js may run before all the included scripts have been loaded. Because of this I want to have everything the script absolutely needs within the script, so I can be sure it's available. Also, if moved to another file, what to do if that other file cannot be loaded for some reason?
I don't think that's a big issue, though. We've got enough Javascript-savvy people who can do it, and those who don't want to touch the script can just use the MediaWiki:UploadFormLabels method, or simply click the "translate this" links (see them e.g. here) and give us the translation, and someone who knows how to do it will then add the translation. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Please note that if you won't provide a valid license in 7 days your image will be delated and if you upload a lot of images without licenses you may be blocked from editing wikimedia-commons. Thank you.

Upload form design: help texts[edit]

All right, there is a demo of what could be done with popups available here. It uses exactly the technique I've outlined on my talk page, except for the transclusion. The page contains all the popup texts, they're just not visible. I didn't see any flickering...

The problem with the invisible headers showing up in the TOC could be avoided on the upload form simply by not using headers ("==", "===", etc.) in the help texts. But ultimately, I think the parser should offer a way to exclude headers from the TOC. Lupo 00:07, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload form V2.0[edit]

All right, you may now take a look at the new prototype. Try it out here. All the buttons and texts are configured on-wiki. A full list is at MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts. This is actually a template; it takes three parameters:

  • lang=de, en, fr, etc. The ISO639 language code. Optional, defaults to "en"
  • useform=ownwork, fromflickr, fromwikimedia, fromgov, experienced. Our hacked language suffixes. Optional, defaults to empty.
  • live=1. If set, the whole thing is wrapped in a <div style="display:none">

This takes care of all the configuration and inclusions necessary for a particular form in a particular language. For localization, it is not necessary to touch it.

MediaWiki:Uploadfooter needs to be configured correctly. It now contains simply {{MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts|live=1}}, which generates the hidden stuff for the standard English upload form. MediaWiki:Uploadfooter/ownwork is set to {{MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts|useform=ownwork|live=1}}, which overrides some of the default messages. (Currently, only one message is overwritten, though. I just didn't do the others.) For the German upload form, MediaWiki:Uploadfooter/de would need to be set to {{MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts|lang=de|live=1}}, and for the German "own work" form, MediaWiki:Uploadfooter/deownwork will need to be {{MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts|lang=de|useform=ownwork|live=1}}. And so on...

The MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts template can also be used to check what the current setting are: just make a template transclusion without the "live" argument. For instance, on some empty page, add {{MediaWiki:UploadFormTexts|useform=ownwork}} and hit "preview".

Individual items can be configured for other languages/forms as usual on subpages. For instance, the default help text for the source field is at MediaWiki:UploadFormSourceHelp. The overriding definition for the "ownwork" upload form is at MediaWiki:UploadFormSourceHelp/ownwork. The one for German would be at MediaWiki:UploadFormSourceHelp/de,and the one for the German "own work" form would be at MediaWiki:UploadFormSourceHelp/deownwork.

Help texts and graphical UI elements are enclosed in <div>s, while labels and error messages are enclosed in <span>s. (This happens automatically, no need to write HTML in any of these messages.) Labels and error messages should thus be simple one-liners, but they may contain wikitext. Help messages may be arbitrarily complex, see e.g. the basic upload form, the help text for the upload summary (which is at MediaWiki:UploadFormDescriptionHelp)...

The definitions of the graphical elements (the button and the close button of the help texts, and the "+" button for adding more descriptions) are also enclosed in <div>s. A button is defined by giving up to three images (which should have the same size). The first image is for the normal state, the second for the hover state, and the third for the "active" state, i.e., when the button is clicked. For the "+" button, one may alternatively also give a simple text string. If so, there must not be any linebreaks at MediaWiki:UploadFormAddDescButton (or the appropriate subpage). (It's a red link because I've not configured it but left it at the default, which is "+".)

I've also given the form a little breathing space. I've been bold and have done so globally. I wonder if anyone will notice it.[1]

This new form with help support has been tested so far only on FF2.0.0.12 and on IE6. I'll do testing for Opera and Safari/Win later.

As usual, this is just a prototype that shows what is possible. It still has a couple of minor layout problems (sometimes, the help button is displayed below the label because the browser refuses to make that table column wider). And of course, the popup help texts can be changed freely at the appropriate message pages, and the behaviour of these popups could also be changed, if explicit click-and-close was not wanted. And yes, I know that the "Categories" label has two colons. I'll need to adapt HotCat... :-)

Have fun!

Upload form[edit]

re your blog:

  • the interface is fine, what I meant is it would be nice to see a second description box in my language of choice open by default even if I set the interface to english (programmers tend to do that because localisations usually suck; MediaWiki's is pretty good, but old reflexes die hard :-)
  • localised licenses: if the english one has to be default for legal reasons, it would still be nice to be able to see it in other languages without opening new windows. Maybe putting an onclick handler on the language links to load the new text in place (that would could be used even outside the new upload form), or adding a "yes, I know what I'm doing and I want legal texts in my own language" checkbox to the gadgets. It would be even nicer if it would show some explanatory text along with the actual license (the /doc subpage maybe, if Commons uses that system) so its easier to decide which template is suitable.
  • I uploaded my category browser here (see talk for how to use). Again, this is a quick hack (ab)using MediaWiki's category tree feature, and not the right way such a feature should be done, but it shows how useful it can be.

--Tgr 16:12, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I agree that browsing the category tree from the top is not very useful, but one could use HotCat's autocomplete function to find a related category, and then the tree browser to find the best fitting subcategory. The first part is easy with autocomplete and painful in tree view; for the second part its the opposite IMHO.

For the descriptions, I was thinking of a user monobook.js preference like uploadFormLanguages = ['en', 'de', 'it']; which would override the default "english + interface language" setting. I think such a thing would be helpful to power users who upload a lot, and would not complicate the code much. --Tgr 12:59, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Description box default languages: ✓ Done. Try setting the following in your monobook.js (or modern.js, or...):
var UploadForm_description_languages = ['fr', 'en', 'de', 'qwerty', 'de-als'];
That should give you an upload form that always (and regardless of your user interface settings or the uselang parameter) has five description boxes: French, English, German, Unknown language (because "qwerty" doesn't exist as a language code), and German again (because "de-als" doesn't exist either, but "de" exists). Lupo 13:35, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I won't change the license preview. If people want localized license texts, they can put e.g. GFDL/it instead of GFDL in their subpage of MediaWiki:Licenses. Further explanations about licenses are tricky; some people say these are useless because only the actual license text is legally binding, so people should read those. But if such explanations were desired, I'd suggest simply placing an "explain" link into the templates themselves. Lupo 13:35, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have created Commons:Upload/ca and I have requested: MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext/caownwork, MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext/cafromwikimedia, MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext/cafromflickr, MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext/ca and MediaWiki talk:Licenses/ca. I think that's all. Next, it will be necessary to create some MediWikis for code langs caownwork, cafromwikimedia and cafromflickr, and finally MediaWiki:Upload-url/ca with Commons:Upload/ca. Do I missed anything? With the new upload form I am not sure if {{SpecialUpload elements}} has all necessary MediaWikis. --V.Riullop 16:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Re: Upload form[edit]

Thanks for the thanks :-) BTW, I noticed a strange problem: apparently, transclusions don't work on all our /ownwork etc. system messages. They do work on MediaWiki:Uploadfooter, but I had to subst the transclusion in e.g. MediaWiki:Sourcefilename/nlownwork since the upload form displayed the literal string "{{MediaWiki:Sourcefilename/nl}}". The same effect is still visible e.g. at the Italian upload form because I didn't change it there yet. That's not the doing of the new script, it also occurs on the the old Italian upload form. Redirects also don't work. Did this ever work at all? Lupo 15:28, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's a bug in the source. See SpecialUpload.php and search for "sourcefilename". You'll find these two lines:
$sourcefilename = wfMsgExt( 'sourcefilename', 'escapenoentities' );
$destfilename = wfMsgExt( 'destfilename', 'escapenoentities' );
This is wrong. In version 1.11.0, this read
$sourcefilename = wfMsgHtml( 'sourcefilename' );
$destfilename = wfMsgHtml( 'destfilename' );
but maybe it should simply read
$sourcefilename = wfMsgExt( 'sourcefilename', 'parseinline' );
$destfilename = wfMsgExt( 'destfilename', 'parseinline' );
I don't know which version would be correct (the different wfMsg functions constantly confuse me), but I know that the current version is wrong. And while they're at it, they could make sure that all these labels are read the same way such that wikilinks and transclusions work in all of them. Lupo 06:24, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see you reported this as bugzilla:14496 and that it was fixed in r36157. We're already at 36185, so we already have the fix. Cool! Lupo 07:25, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Problem with one transclusion[edit]

Hello, Pfctdayelise. I saw today something wrong, which you may be able to help me fix.

After the transclusions made by MediaWiki Update Bot in MediaWiki:Upload-maxfilesize/bgfromflickr, MediaWiki:Upload-maxfilesize/bgfromgov, MediaWiki:Upload-maxfilesize/bgfromwikimedia and MediaWiki:Upload-maxfilesize/bgownwork, the parameter $1 is not recognized any more and is not substituted by 20 MB in the BG interface of the uploads (see). I checked other language interfaces but could not detect the same problem. Do you have any idea what is to be fixed? I am sure that it worked fine before the transclusion... Cheers, Spiritia 10:50, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, with subst it seems to work, but without it doesn't. I will add subst: everywhere, I hope this will be fine with you. :-) Spiritia 11:09, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Featured picture categories[edit]

Hi White Cat, it was nice to meet you in Alexandria. Now, down to business. I am not too convinced that your work with Category:Featured picture of the year and its child categories is a very good idea. Category:Featured picture of the year (candidate) is going to be more or less exactly equal with Category:Featured pictures (no wait, now it's Category:Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons thanks to you...! Not good to break long-existing convention like that you know!), and the other subcats are so sparsely updated that they are better suited as galleries. Did you discuss any of these ideas anywhere before implementing them? --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 19:35, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, it was nice meeting you too (although it was rather brief :)).
I do want to point out I have pretty much completely abandoned commons. You are free to revert anything and everything I made thus far if you desire. I wont object. I do not see Category:Featured pictures or POTY or any other "quality" metric we have here as anything remotely useful anymore.
I did my best here at commons as per COM:MELLOW#Remember... but I received hostility in return. Hence why I decided to leave commons until it is repaired back to how it used to be. This community has became more hostile than en.wikipedia.

Hello Pfctdayelise/Archive08!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Sdrtirs (talk) 11:37, 2 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't have any fanatic fans, so no. But then, I haven't had the magic touch of a photo with Jimbo, so who knows? Maybe soon you can give me pointers. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:48, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You didn't offend me. I just don't have much energy for it. As dumb as moving a humungous category unnecessarily is, moving it back is nearly equally dumb, when the name is acceptable. And I try not to rise to poor-me bait. The usual. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:48, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Maybe this it's not a goodbye letter, but it does leave me that chill in the belly when I see a good contributor go. I noticed you had become less active, but the fact is, you're still around, and that gives me a fuzzy feeling. So I hope I'll continue having this fuzzy feeling for a long time, because you have been my role model on Commons, and I can't imagine this project without you in it - the hole would be enormous, that's for sure. Please accept a big hug from a former newbie who was always treated with kindness by you. PS: I'm also scratching my head about some of the stuff you referred. Particularly, about how to make the whole thing more user-friendly. Alas, as a non-techie, I can only criticize, not really offer good fixes... :( Patrícia msg 21:39, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons Scope - Pdf and Djvu files[edit]

I have added some text dealing with these based on the discussion on the talk page. Users are by no means unanimous about which files should be allowed, and I have tried to follow the majority opinion. Thus, the suggestion is that if a Pdf or Djvu file is educationally useful even to a single other Wiki it should be kept. Would you like to comment before this page goes live? Please do so at the bottom of the talk page. Regards, --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikipedia WikiProject Images and Media[edit]

I have made a proposal to move the inactive en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Graphics to WikiProject Images and Media, to create a centralized location for efforts and discussions relating to images and media on Wikipedia. I was hoping to give the (three) contributors a chance to comment, but two have so-far ignored it, and one is not active. So, as you seem to be the only member of Commons:Wikimedia Outreach Project/enwikipedia, I was hoping to get your opinion. If the move is successful, then a first big (ongoing) project will be to get Wikipedia's policies and procedures on the same page as Commons (as I brought up here) . Please read the proposal and comment there. Thanks! ~ JohnnyMrNinja 04:09, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

your opinion[edit]

hi, i am LadyofHats. i wanted to ask your opinion about Blechnic. i have honestly trying to be constructive about all his critics, i have looked for more sources and changed the image as he wanted, but the only thing i get back from him is very harsh unclear critics. Unfortunally this doesnt include only the grape diagram, but instead he has been trying to delete some other of my diagrams. I honestly dont know anymore how to deal with him without starting an open fight. he is just so unflexible... anyway, wanted to know your opinion on how to deal with him..-LadyofHats (talk) 09:52, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It doesn't work sticking to just the comments because LadyofHats ignores them. She is misusing botanical illustrations that don't illustrate what is clearly seen in them. What can I say to that? I've posted a dozen or so corrections and she keeps getting them wrong. She is quite the one to be telling people how to behave in posts, but not the one to be correcting her illustrations in a responsible manner. All over the internet, search engines pop up with her bad drawings. I first saw a couple of them alongside some Far Side cartoons on a bulletin board at work.
It is a botanical disaster and should not be considered a botanical illustration when the illustrator uses an illustration that shows one thing then clearly draws something else.
However, I am tired of fighting Wikipedians who want to keep bad and inaccurate drawings that are not based on anything. The drawing I tried to get deleted was also incorrect. LadyofHats does not usually use biological sources, and when she does they are so old they contain artifacts that don't exist in cells. Then these are perpetuated all over the web in a dozen and more languages. She takes no responsibility for correcting them.
But this is not about getting a correct illustration of a grape. This is a private joy club. As long as it is pretty, it will be kept, and LadyofHats will be profusely praised for it, no matter how bad, no matter how little actual factual research went into it.
I've volunteered to help her, but she doesn't listen to criticisms of her drawings.
So keep it. Translate into dozens of languages, and spit it all over the web. Then when Wikipedia gets mocked for producing incorrect diagrams, and for paying people to produce them, you eat the blame, Pfctdayelise, and LadyofHats. It's all yours.
And, LadyofHats, what you fail to say about the images I have tried to get deleted is that they had to be corrected by other illustrators to be accurate. No one with a background in biology has ever agreed to keep your version over mine.
Facts have a way of being inflexible. The grape is as it is, not as you want it to be because that's how you want to draw it. In fact, you could see the locules on a grape clearly by simply cutting one open, and see for yourself what they look like and compare it to what you drew. Plants and all their parts, including ovaries grow in specific ways because of genes that tell them where to orient new cellular tissue and what type of tissue during development and growth--this is known as biology. They don't grow as an illustrator dictates just because the illustrator is seeking praise for anything.
Keep your pictures. Project Greenspun is just a flush fund. You don't want biologists criticizing the images because this will interfere with feeling good for producing a pretty picture. --Blechnic (talk) 01:33, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question[edit]

Hello,

I'd need to know why the "non-commercial/educational" permission is "not acceptable" on the "free use provided that" tag. If the copyright holder has explicitely stated that he authorizes non-commercial reproduction, that should not make sense. Thanks for your help. JJ Georges (talk) 09:02, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, I just asked you this question because I want to make sure that I understand all the rules here if and when I want to upload images. Quite simply, the fact that we're not supposed to include images even when the copyright holder states that they're free to use for non-commercial/research purposes (which is exactly what wikipedia does) doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I hope the links you sent me help me understand this (I just hope I can find a clearly-written rule and not just talk pages between users). Thanks & best regards JJ Georges (talk) 15:07, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, Pfctdayelise!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Commons:Language policy[edit]

Hi, in an effort to move the Commons:Language policy closer to completion, I have been editing it and cleaning it up for the last few days. I have tried to make the page as neutral and consistent as possible with the relevant policy and guidleine pages that it cross references.

I would appreciate it, as someone who has discussed some of these policies in the past, if you could look at Commons talk:Language policy and contribute your thoughts. This is the version that exists as I am writing it and I am encouraging everyone to consider the "static" page until everything gets sorted out.

Robert Scoble - PD vs CC[edit]

Hello, I have a question. Flickr doesn't allow PD because they want the URL linkbacks, but you can read at http://scobleizer.com/2008/01/31/putting-photos-into-public-domain/ that all images by Robert Scoble have been released into PD. As he mentions, we have uploaded many of his images, like File:Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T.jpg from Flickr, but they are tagged as CC. How do we go about clarifying that this image (and all images by Robert Scoble) are actually PD when the Flickr license says CC? Does this require an OTRS ticket or special template? Is there a tool that would find all WMC images from that photostream? ▫ JohnnyMrNinja (talk / en) 23:07, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Invitation to tech chats[edit]

Hi! I saw that you're interested in the software side of Wikimedia, and I wanted to invite you to watch and participate in our live tech chats, which include video streaming. The next one is next week and you'll be able to watch, live, via screensharing, as a developer fixes a bug, including investigation, a git commit, getting it reviewed and merged, and closing the Bugzilla ticket.

Hope this is of interest! Best wishes, Sumana Harihareswara, Engineering Community Manager at WMF (talk) 16:57, 19 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

To be clear. Jonathan Alpeyrie initially contacted Wikimedia through one of the generic contact emails and wanted to donate some of his war photography. I volunteered (via Bastique) to walk through the process with him. I talked him through creating an account (User:Jalpeyrie) and uploading photos (he uploaded File:NKR war.JPG). After that he was travelling in South America and had poor internet access so he emailed me the rest of the photos he wanted to share, which I uploaded on his behalf. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 02:56, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bot de-flagging notification[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise/Archive08, I'm writing to you because your bot MediaWiki Update Bot (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information) is about to be de-flagged as a result of inactivity. If you'd like to keep that account flagged as a bot, please speak up at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag#Discussion; otherwise, I'll remove the bot flag from that account in a week from now (20 February 2014). Thanks for your understanding, odder (talk) 22:31, 13 February 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ArchiveBot[edit]

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Regards, FASTILY 07:36, 20 April 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category discussion warning

Commons press has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
